On the Mountain

A top choice for fine dining is Pilar, high up on the mountain with the best view of any restaurant at Happo One. Expect three-course meals and a variety of different cuisine, including Italian, French, and Japanese, plus plenty of choices on the wine list! For something a little more low-key, Roots Cafe serves up simple eats like soups, wraps, burgers, and curries, conveniently situated right next door to the Evergreen Ski School.

If you're just after a snack to keep you going, there's nowhere better than the bakery at the top of the Adam Gondola, serving delicious fresh pastries and a great cup of coffee, a perfect kick start to your day on the slopes! When the time comes around for a pit stop beer the best spot to enjoy a cold one on the mountain is the Corona Bar, stunning views and plenty of cheers!

Off the Mountain

There are a feast of awesome dining out options in Hakuba, but here are our top three that you certainly shouldn't miss. First up we have the Double Black Hotel restaurant, where you can sample the chef's signature dishes with a sophisticated degustation session of Japanese Italian fusion fare! Combined with fine wines, it's one of the most elegant ways to spend an evening in Happo One.

Second on our list is Wagyu Kobeya at the Hakuba Windy Lodge, a traditional Yakiniku restaurant specialising in delectable Japanese BBQ. It's an incredibly social dining experience, where your table is fitted with a hot grill in the centre and raw meat is served for you to cook it yourself. Meat lovers will be in heaven here, smoke from the grill fills the air as the casual atmosphere grows ever more friendly in line with the jugs of beer arriving at tables!

Finally we have Mimi's at the Phoenix Hotel, a restaurant and bar with an extensive menu of top quality meat and fish dishes to choose from, quite literally something for everyone. This place prides itself on its large selection of sake, and there's no better place in Happo One for a tasting session of Japan's traditional rice wine.

Getting to these spectacular dining spots is simple when you book a table, because they all operate a pickup service for diners not staying at their respective hotels! Prices are on the higher end and range from ¥6,000 to ¥15,000 JPY ($79 to $198 AUD) per person.

Après-Ski

Once it's time to get down to the bottom of the mountain make a beeline for Sakka, where there's a diverse collection of food trucks cooking up meals for the masses. Choose from all sorts of cuisine, from Japanese and American to Indian and Mexican (great value food at around ¥1,000 to ¥1,500 JPY ($13 to $20 AUD)), along with beers and other intoxicating beverages for those ready to get the après-ski started! The pumping music and warming heaters usual keep you here much longer than you ever intend to stay...

From here, our favourite place to start (or continue!) a night out is The Rabbit Hole, a daytime cafe that turns into a cosy bar with live music after dark. The atmosphere is undeniably fun here, making it very hard to call it a night once closing time comes at 9pm. Your next stop should be The Beach Bar, a lively tropical-themed pub that keeps the party going into the early hours, or simply The Pub, a traditional tavern with all the essential ingredients, including a pool table and live music.

Moving on, in Happo Village one of the most popular watering holes is Jack's Sports Bar, where good wholesome fun like karaoke and a pub quiz can be enjoyed. Another two great spots to party are Bar Refuel and Recovery Bar, but be prepared for a big night and a painful recovery the next day!
